Alexander “Sandy” McCall Smith has written more than 60 books throughout his extensive career, including academic titles, short story collections, children's books and several independent fiction series. He is best known for his internationally acclaimed “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency” series, which has been at the top of best-seller lists throughout the world. His books have won numerous awards, and have been translated into 39 languages, while selling more than 14 million copies worldwide. McCall Smith was born in Zimbabwe and received his education in Africa and Scotland. He served as Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh for many years, and currently serves as Professor Emeritus. He has worked extensively in the field of bioethics, including serving as the vice-chairman of the Human Genetics Commission of the United Kingdom and the chairman of the British Medical Journal Ethics Committee. McCall Smith plays the bassoon for the Really Terrible Orchestra, an amateur musical ensemble which he co-founded with his wife, Elizabeth. McCall Smith is married with two daughters and lives with his wife in Edinburgh, Scotland.
