Be a part of your community: read the same book, at the same time, in the same community.
Thousands of people read “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency,” by international best-selling, award-winning author, Alexander McCall Smith, during Pierce County Library System and The News Tribune’s first community one book program: Pierce County READS, sponsored by Key Foundation, a foundation funded by KeyBank.
Pierce County READS is a community involvement program where everybody in one place, at one time, reads, talks about, shares and enjoys the same book.
The goal of Pierce County READS is to result in thousands of residents reading, discussing and enjoying the same book, and coming together as a community.
Community one-book programs have been wildly successful in communities throughout the United States. Pierce County READS 2008 was targeted for adults with an anticipation that college and high school students may participate, too.
Many community partners also participated in Pierce County’s first READs program.
Pierce County and 15 cities and towns issued proclamations declaring February-April 2008 "Pierce County READS." Those cities and towns include the City of Bonney Lake, Buckley, DuPont, Edgewood, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Milton, Orting, Roy, Steilacoom, Sumner and University Place, and Town of Eatonville, South Prairie and Wilkeson.
Pierce County READS concluded with the author giving a free presentation and book signing.
Washington State Library, Office of the Secretary of State, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services awarded Pierce County Library Foundation with A One City One Book grant to support Pierce County Library’s Pierce County READS. Rainier Pacific Foundation is an event supporter.
