In the September 2006 primary election, voters gave a 56% approval to re-authorize Pierce County Library System’s levy rate and maintain current services and add library services. With the Library’s re-authorized levy rate of 48 cents for every $1,000 of assessed property value, the Library will deliver communities the following services in 2007. |
- On June 17, increase open hours by 20% at library branches.
- Offer a wider variety of books, e-sources and other materials and cut the time people wait for popular books by 30% from 19 weeks to 12 weeks.
- Increase open hours by 20% at library branches, opening all 17 libraries on Monday, nine libraries on Sunday afternoon, and six libraries on Thursday evening.
- Add services for kids and teenagers; including helping prepare children to read, assisting kids with homework research, and providing online help with homework.
- Upgrade services and technology for customers, by offering more computers with Internet access and computer classes for adults.

Searchable lists of books from participating local schools’ Accelerated Reader lists. Many of the 13 school districts in the Library’s service area offer the Accelerated Reader program. Students earn points at school by reading from a list of pre-selected books, and then taking tests about the books.
