How do I apply for a Pierce County Library card?
First, check your eligibility: Pierce County Library System cards are free to residents within the Library’s service area and some reciprocating libraries.
- Apply at any Pierce County Library: Please bring valid photo ID and official indication of your address with you. If you are eligible, a permanent card will be assigned to you at that time.
- Apply online: You will be assigned a temporary account number, which you may use to place holds on books and other materials or use e-sources. You will receive a permanent card, necessary in order to check out materials, when you go to your library.

- Contact your library. You may replace your card for a small fee. Read more >>
How do I renew my books or other items I’ve checked out?
- At a library - At an Express Check workstation, you may simply check out the item again with the same card. A staff member can also renew the item for you.
- By phone - Call from home, your mobile phone or any phone 24/7 to use automated phone line renewal. Renew by phone: 253-535-9300.
- Via Internet (24/7) - In Library Catalog, log into My Account, pull up Items Out, select the items you wish to renew, click Renew Selected Items button at bottom of screen. (Please remember to review the confirmed new due dates.)
- Special case for downloadable audiobooks: If the three-week license to an audio file you have previously downloaded has expired, you may return to the appropriate download page to download another copy of the three-week license, thus 'renewing' your audio book.
Note: If an item is already overdue when you attempt to renew the item, any late fines accrued at that point in time will still apply.

What fines or fees does the library charge?
Late fines on most materials are 15¢; reference materials have fines of $1 per day.
Late fines will begin accruing against your account beginning the day after the item is due. Items returned to the book drop in the evening after closing hours will be treated as having been returned that day.
Returning an already late item will stop additional fines, but will not remove any daily fines already accumulated.
Lost item replacement fees will be charged to your account for any items lost.
Any account with more than $10 accumulated in fines or fees will be blocked from checking out materials until sufficient payments are made to bring that total below $10.
How do I make changes to my account?
- To change your account address, phone number or e-mail address, log in to your account and click on Change Account Information.
- To change method of notification (choices are e-mail or telephone), please see e-mail notification tips, or contact your local library.
