Library Account FAQs
Most common questions asked
- When logging on, I am asked for a PIN?
- When your account is created, your PIN number is the last 4 digits of the phone number on that account.
- You can change or customize your PIN in the Patron Account section of the catalog.
First, check your eligibility: Pierce County Library System cards are free to residents within the Library’s service area and some reciprocating libraries.
- Apply at a branch: Please bring valid photo ID and official indication of your address with you. If you are eligible, a permanent card will be assigned to you at that time.
- Apply Online A temporary account number will be assigned to you immediately, which can be used to place holds on books and other materials or use e-sources. A permanent card will be necessary in order to check out materials.
Lost cards: Should be reported immediately and can be replaced for a small fee. Read more >>
How do I renew my books or other items I’ve checked out?
- Renew items in your account via the catalog.
- Select “Patron Account” and “Items Out.” Mark the items you wish to renew, then select “Renew selected items” at bottom of screen.
NOTE: Any item will be blocked from renewal if there is a holds wait list or other people have requested the same item.

Late fines on most materials are 15 cents ($0.15) per day; DVDs and reference materials have fines of $1.00 per day.
Late fines will begin accruing against your account beginning the day after the item is due. Items returned to book drop in the evening after closing hours will be treated as having been returned that day.
Returning an already late item will stop additional fines, but will not remove any daily fines already accumulated.
Lost item replacement fees will be charged to your account for any items lost.
Any account with more than $10.00 accumulated in fines or fees will be blocked from checking out materials until sufficient payments are made to bring that total below $10.00.
