Explorer
Explorer Kids' Bookmobile brings the total "library experience" to kids.
As a true "mobile library," Explorer is designed to encourage its young users to browse, read and talk about books. No other bookmobile in the U.S. has as much space; kids can check out books, work on computers, attend storytime in the two-tiered seating area, or get personal help from a caring librarian while on board.
What makes Explorer special?
Explorer has an expandable wall.
To have room for wall-to-wall books and still have space inside for kids, the circulation desk sits on a movable floor. The motorized unit slides out when the vehicle is parked, so kids can move around and interact with library staff. Take a peek inside Explorer >>
Explorer is a collaborative effort.
Explorer Bookmobile programs are a partnership between Pierce County Library System, local schools, family and youth agencies, and branch libraries.
Why Explorer Kids' Bookmobile?
In 2000, Pierce County Library System embarked upon the Kids' Bookmobile Project, a new program area for the Community Outreach Services and Youth Services Departments. The project's purpose is to lay the foundation for reading and life-long learning skills for children and youth who are most isolated from library branch services.

Our funders
The Pierce County Library Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the library, successfully sought grants and gifts from foundations, corporations, service clubs and individuals to extend the library's budget by funding over 50% of this program.
