Countdown to no-mail notices in 2010!
Save time, money, and the environment! Get your notices about overdue materials and items reserved/on hold by phone or e-mail versus paper mail. Read more >>
- To provide improved and more efficient customer service, offer up-to-date services, be environmentally responsible, and use tax payers’ dollars wisely Pierce County Library System will notify customers via e-mail, telephone, or text messaging for books and other items people have placed on hold or items that are overdue.
- If you are one of the nearly 20,000 people who have asked the Library to notify you of books or other items you’ve placed on hold or when you have an item overdue to tell you via U.S. Mail, we will improve your service by notifying you via e-mail or telephone. In the near future you can also have the option of getting this information via a text message.
- A bonus with the e-mail notification is the Library will tell you the titles of the items ready for you to pick up and send you an e-mail reminder a few days before those items are due.

Currently only 8.6% (19,890 card holders) of Pierce County Library’s customers have requested mail as their preferred notification method to tell them that books or other materials they placed on hold are available or when items they checked out are overdue.
In 2008 the Library sent 85,400 postcard notifications for a cost of $28,000. The Library hopes this move to phone, e-mail or text notification will eliminate that cost.
In August the Library stopped offering the option to mail notices to new card holders, offering telephone and e-mail only. To date, no new customers have requested or commented on U.S. Mail not being a notification option. This lack of public response was similar to other library systems that stopped offering mail notifications.
