- Board holds study session about Lakewood Libraries - 11/28/2022
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – Thursday, Dec. 1, 4-5 p.m., the Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting to discuss the Lakewood Pierce County Libraries.
The study session will be held in person at the Library’s Administrative Center 3005 112th St E, Tacoma WA 98446. Optional virtual attendance is available via https://www.piercecountylibrary.org/about-us/board-trustees/board-agenda-packets/Default.htm.
On Nov. 17, the Lakewood Library Building Community Advisory Committee presented its recommendations for the downtown Lakewood Pierce County Library and the Tillicum Pierce County Library, which is in a neighborhood in Lakewood. For five months, the 12-member volunteer committee reviewed and analyzed information about the libraries from Library System administrators, city building officials, engineers, architects and other professionals.
In creating the recommendations, committee members reviewed volumes of information about the conditions of the buildings and cost scenarios for repairing and replacing the buildings. In addition, they reviewed input from the public, provided via surveys, public events, interviews with community leaders, and comments in emails and at meetings.
For the Lakewood Library, the community advisory committee’s recommendation is to keep the library at the same location, building a new library on the current site. If that is not possible, the committee recommends building a new library in an equally accessible location.
For the Tillicum Library, the committee recommended renovating the existing building or rebuilding on the existing site if the property can be acquired. If not, it recommends pursuing a location near the existing library, and if that is not financially or practically feasible, then the committee recommended building on a parcel currently owned by the City.
At the study session, the Board of Trustees will start its process to determine next steps.

- Library Board to hold first public hearing for 2023 budget - 11/7/2022
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – At the Pierce County Library System’s Board of Trustees’ Wednesday, Nov. 9, 3:30 p.m., meeting, the Board will hold its first public hearing for the Library System’s 2023 budget and conduct other business.
The meeting will be held in person at the Library’s Administrative Center 3005 112th St E, Tacoma WA 98446. Optional virtual attendance is available via https://www.piercecountylibrary.org/about-us/board-trustees/board-agenda-packets/Default.htm.
The Board will conduct its first of two public hearings on the 2023 budget, which the Library System projects to include $46 million in revenue, of which $44 million is budgeted for services, operations and capital investments. 2023 marks the fourth year of operating under the Library’s levy sustainable plan, which resulted from the voter-approved reauthorized levy in 2018. The plan created a multi-year funding cycle to provide stable funding to deliver valued library services.
Another component of the proposed budget shows 2023 as the fourth year the Library System does not plan to charge fines on overdue books and materials. In March 2020, the Library System stopped charging fines to help reduce further economic burdens brought on by the financial crisis stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Bonney Lake Library closed Nov. 13-27 for building updates - 10/31/2022
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – The Bonney Lake Pierce County Library will be closed Sunday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 27, for interior building improvements to better serve the growing and changing community. The Pierce County Library System planned improvements to the library with funding from a voter-approved 2018 levy.
Building updates include:
- Painting the interior of the building.
- Replacing the ceiling mural with community artwork.
- Installing new furniture.
- Updating restrooms and meeting rooms.
- Switching light fixtures and ceiling fans.
So far this year, more than 50,000 people have visited the Bonney Lake Library, making it one of the Library System’s top-five visited locations. Refreshing the interior of the library will create a more welcoming and comfortable space for people to use free library services, especially during a time when costs are on the rise everywhere.
During the two-week closure, due dates and hold times on books, movies and other library materials will be extended. People may also select an alternate pickup location when placing holds, such as nearby Sumner Pierce County Library. The Bonney Lake Library’s outdoor book drop will remain open for people to return library materials.
While the Bonney Lake Library is closed, the Library’s online services are always open at www.piercecountylibrary.org, featuring online e-books, audiobooks, videos and magazines, as well as other services and resources.

- Advisory committee discusses values for libraries in Lakewood - 10/21/2022
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – The Lakewood Library Building Community Advisory Committee (lakewoodcac@pcls.us) will conduct its fifth and final meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Watch in-person at the Pierce County Library System’s Administrative Center, 3005 112th St. E., Tacoma or join the meeting via Zoom: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/88097445054 meeting ID: 880 9744 5054 or on the phone: 253-215-8782 and enter the meeting ID: 880 9744 5054.
At the meeting, a facilitator with BERK Consulting will give a review of the committee’s input from the Oct. 4 meeting, where committee members shared their individual ideas for a downtown Lakewood Library as well as a library in the Tillicum neighborhood. Then, the bulk of the meeting will center on a discussion of the committee’s values for quality library service, such as location and accessibility, sized for services important to the community, ability to offer contemporary library services, and flexibility to adapt space for future services.
In addition, to comments sent to the committee via email at lakewoodcac@pcls.us, the committee will hear comments from the public at the meeting.
The Pierce County Library and city of Lakewood created the Community Advisory Committee to address the following:
- Understand public input from 2019.
- Assess public input gathered this summer in surveys, interviews and at public events.
- Review significant building needs.
- Provide advice to the Library System about providing quality library services for Lakewood.
The committee will give its recommendations to the Library Board of Trustees and Lakewood City Council on Thursday, Nov. 17. The Board of Trustees will determine next steps.
In June, the Library System closed the Lakewood Pierce County Library because it was in critical and unsafe condition and needed significant maintenance and repair. Since that time, the Library System has continued to serve the community with nearby Tillicum Pierce County Library and other libraries in the district. Also, the Library System is offering pop-up libraries and services with community partners throughout Lakewood. At the same time, the Library System has secured space for interim library services on Gravelly Lake Dr. S.W. and Alfaretta St. S.W., a few blocks north of the current Lakewood Library.
