- Pierce County Library thanks community for 75 years - 4/15/2021
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – The Pierce County Library System thanks communities for the honor of serving it for 75 years! May 1, 2021, the Library System celebrates 75 years of service 75.pcls.us.
“Happy birthday to the Library System really means a big thank you to Pierce County communities for the true honor of being the community’s choice for the discovery and exchange of information and ideas and to spark success for residents for 75 years!” said Library Executive Director Georgia Lomax. “The communities have transformed a lot since 1946 and the Library has changed along with them to provide services meeting their most important library needs.”
Would 1946 Pierce County Library recognize 2021 Pierce County Library?
In 1946, the Library System served 55,000 people with 6,385 books, from seven locations, and 1,108 people had library cards.
Today, the Library System serves 620,000 with nearly 1 million books, movies and other items, from 20 locations and online, and 360,000 people have library cards – with many of those cards serving an entire family.
“Happy 75th birthday to my treasured Pierce County Library System!” said Gig Harbor resident Nancy Nelson. “I absolutely love and thank the library for its incredible service to our communities. Learning to read is by far the most significant experience for me and I thank libraries for that tremendous gift.”
Nelson has had a Pierce County Library card for more than 40 years.
As with most industries, a significant service difference from 1946 and today is technology. In 1946, none of the libraries envisioned space for computers or printers. Now, via the internet, people can send documents to be printed at a library and pick up copies at the curb, and they can check out books and read them instantly 24/7 from their computer, electronic tablet or phone.
Through the years services changed to meet community needs – from staff helping people research from the card catalog to now engaging with people virtually.
The Library’s commitment to connect people with valued, reliable resources at the right time continues steadfast. With the public’s investment, the Library System continues to support residents’ growth and curiosity, offer excellent reading choices, and work to connect and strengthen growing and changing communities.
The Library System is celebrating and thanking communities with a community activity for all ages, featuring the highly acclaimed picture book “The Big Umbrella” by Amy June Bates and Juniper Bates, a mother-daughter team. Through StoryWalks in English and Spanish throughout the community, the Library will celebrate 75 years of service, which aligns beautifully with “The Big Umbrella” story inspiring inclusion, social consciousness and peace.
As Pierce County expands, its metaphorical umbrella, the Pierce County Library, will continue to change to meet the needs of all people in the many diverse communities, neighborhoods and families the Library is very thankful and appreciative to serve.

Trustee recruitment. The Board is recruiting (trustee.pcls.us) to fill a planned vacancy on its Board of Trustees, with Trustee Rob Allen’s term ending in August 2021. The Board is seeking a trustee with an interest in serving diverse communities and a commitment to public service. Trustees shape and guide library service throughout unincorporated Pierce County and 15 cities and towns annexed to the Library System. Five Pierce County residents serve on the volunteer board. Trustees must live in the Library’s service area. People interested in being a Trustee must apply by April 30.
Property updates.
- The Library sold a portion of property at the Graham Pierce County Library to Pierce County. The county said it plans to widen 224th St. E. and install a traffic signal in front of the library. With these changes, the Library System plans to make improvements to the Graham Library’s parking lot and improve access to the building.
- This year, the city of Puyallup plans to annex a portion of unincorporated Pierce County, 134 acres east of Freeman Road. The Pierce County Library currently serves property owners in this area, which includes 26 residential properties and warehouses. When the annexation is complete, Puyallup Public Library will serve residents in this area. Because of a borrowing agreement between the two library systems, residents may continue to receive library services from Pierce County Library as well.

- Lakewood Library reopening with limited technology services - 2/22/2021
PIERCE COUNTY, Washington – Welcome back to Lakewood Pierce County Library for technology services with computers, Wi-Fi and printers starting today, Feb. 22. The Pierce County Library System is reopening this library with limited technology services in its meeting room as part of a pilot project for reopening libraries according to the Healthy Washington Roadmap to Recovery plan.
“The Library System is reimagining service and is excited to bring more access to technology to Pierce County communities with the launch of this pilot,” said Pierce County Library Executive Director Georgia Lomax. “This location serves communities with among the lowest in-home access to technology in the county. This limited service will help lessen the digital divide that has grown more sharply during the pandemic.”
Technology is a core service the Library has been unable to offer since closing its buildings in March 2020 to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
People can make advanced appointments to use technology or visit Lakewood Library during technology service hours. The building will be open:
Sunday: 1-4 p.m.
Monday-Thursday: 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Closed for cleaning 1-3 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Closed for cleaning 1-3 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Closed for cleaning 1-3 p.m.
People can work on job applications and resumes, do homework, catch up on emails, or do other activities on the computers. Individuals of all ages may use the computers on tables spaced six feet a part in the public meeting room.
The health and safety of the public and staff is a top priority in opening the building. In alignment with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and requirements from the Washington State Office of the Governor and Department of Health, facial coverings are required on library property. For further safety, the Library has installed social distance markers, Plexiglas partitions, UV light boxes to clean laptops and mice and staff continuously sanitizes the buildings.
The Library System will review and adjust this pilot service and follow the guidance and information from state and local health officials to prepare plans to reopen more buildings safely this year.
Also, in 2021 the Library System will continue not charging fines on overdue books and other materials, to help reduce further burdens on people during the economic crisis from the pandemic.
The Library System continues to encourage people to use the Library’s curbside service and pick up books, movies and other items as well as access the Library’s many online resources including e-books, audiobooks and e-sources for learning and enjoyment. Also, the Library System continues to invite people to join its online classes and events for early learners, students, teenagers and adults.
